Who Are We?

Are posting WebTracts on message boards spamming?

After posting many  WebTracts we have received several emails accusing us of spamming.  So we decided to look into whether or not posting a Christian message is spamming.  We went to a popular message board to find out their rules on spamming.  In the member conduct section of the terms of service we found:

You agree to not use the Service to:

upload, post, email or otherwise transmit any unsolicited or unauthorized advertising, promotional materials, "junk mail," "spam," "chain letters," "pyramid schemes," or any other form of solicitation, except in those areas (such as shopping rooms) that are designated for such purpose;

So we can see that spamming is connected with advertising or promotional materials.  This implies that the poster would gain in some way by the reader reading the message and following some set of instructions.  This is not true when WebTracts are posted correctly.

We believe that message boards are topic driven.  They are a place to exchange ideas on a particular topic.  It is this common topic that allows WebTracts to be posted on most boards. The message may not agree with what most visitors to the message board expect but the topic is the same.  For example, placing a Christian message about the existence of God on a Atheists message board is not spamming because God is the central topic of this kind of message board.  Of course it is not in agreement with most postings but it most certainly about the same topic.

The only other point of contention may be that we post a Hyperlink to the WebTract. This is prevent the need to copy all the information into the posting.   The reason that Hyperlinks were created.  In light of this we do not believe that posting WebTracts is spamming.  Please email us at stm@stonetablets.org with any comments about WebTracts.
